COURSE COMMENTS

During November and December, Terry O’Brien and Claire Wood spent a lot of time and energy developing a Course Timetable and booking venues.

The Course List showing courses, venues, course leaders and phone numbers - in calendar form - for February 1999 has alrady been mailed to members.  The calendar for March 1999 will be mailed as soon as finalised.

Please phone course leaders to confirm your place on any course.  Confirmation is not needed for the Current Affairs (discussion group) and Book Club, which are continuing courses, unless you have not participated previously.

Please note that, as the Special Meeting is being held at the Neighbourhood Centre on Monday 1 February, the Current Affairs group will be starting on 15 February.

Because so many members become involved with grandchildren during school holidays, courses will be confined to school terms.

The course on Introduction to Computers will be offered in second term starting late April or early May.

Notice of SPECIAL MEETING to discuss Association Rules and  Incorporation

    Time:       10.00 am

    Date:       Monday 1 February 1999

    Place:      Neighbourhood Centre,

cnr The Entrance Rd and Campbell St,

          The Entrance

During the Christmas break, the Committee met on a couple of occasions.  Issues which arose or needed discussion include the following.

Dorothy Rhodes stood down from the position of Welfare Officer because of other commitments in the current year - including supervising the birth of another  grandchild.  Dawn Jones has agreed to fill in for the time being and would like to hear from you about any members to whom a card should be sent.

Suggestions for a logo were considered, the most popular options being a mortar board and a pelican.  The majority leaned towards the latter.

There was a long discussion on the need to incorporate.  Although there are some legal advantages for this, there are also a number of disadvantages which include extra work of administration and extra costs for fees, insurance  and of renting some venues.  Many small clubs exist without incorporation and, so,  the Committee decided that, on balance, as we presently look like having only 30 or 40 members in the immediate future, we should consider deferring incorporation until the association reaches a size which   makes it more viable.  This matter as well as the proposals for Association Rules are to  be considered at the Special Meeting to be held on 1 February - see box.

Some time ago, our Secretary, Elaine, wrote to U3A Sydney attaching authorisations from many of our  members requesting that their surplus subscriptions be transferred to our association.  We have received a response from U3A Sydney returning these authorisations and saying that, although they had a mandate to transfer surplus subscriptions to U3A Central Coast,  they had no such mandate to transfer surplus subscriptions to U3A Tuggerah Lakes.  Although the total amount is not great, the Committee felt there was a matter of principle involved and asked the Secretary to write back saying we could not see why authorisations from U3A Tuggerah Lakes members conferred any less a mandate than that  from members of U3A Central Coast.   As at 15 January, we had not yet heard from U3A Sydney.
